Model-Based Safety Analysis and Design Enhancement of a Marine LNG Fuel Feeding System

Recent regulatory requirements for shipping emissions control have led to the adoption of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a marine fuel and design LNG-fuelled vessels. Considering potential safety implications due system failure/unavailability, this study aims at analysis low-pressure LNG feeding using novel model-based methodology. The proposed methodology is based on functional modelling, leading failure diagrams development, combines use Failure Modes, Effects, Criticality Analysis (FMECA) Fault Tree (FTA), which are performed in MADe™ PTC Windchill software environments. FMECA results employed identify investigated critical components failures well specifying top events subsequently FTA, evaluates rates. identification leads modification targeting reduced metrics. This demonstrate that evaporator, pressure build-up unit, sensors, cryogenic valve assemblies most system, whilst enhanced exhibits rate by 69% comparison baseline system. reveals advantages developed along with some limitations tools contributes quantitative ship complex systems.
